History, Food, Passion, and Romance
Central and South America hold some of the most extreme geography on the planet, often within the same country. Peru alone runs from Lima's coastal desert up through Cusco at 11,152 feet and down into the cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu, three distinct climates inside a single itinerary. Patagonia, split between Argentina and Chile, sits at the literal bottom of the world, glaciers and granite spires that don't resemble anywhere else on the continent, while a few thousand miles north, the Atacama Desert in northern Chile counts as the driest place on earth, some stretches going years without measurable rain. Costa Rica and Panama add an entirely different register: cloud forest, rainforest canopy, and in Panama's case, a canal that reshaped global shipping and still runs ships through it daily.
That range demands real planning rather than a single template applied everywhere. The Amazon rainforest spans nine countries and covers roughly 40 percent of South America, so which country and which lodge matter enormously, a river-based lodge in Ecuador delivers a different experience than one in Brazil's deeper interior.
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu limits permits to around 500 per day, including guides and porters, and those book out months ahead during peak season. Altitude matters too: Cusco sits high enough that most travelers need a day or two to acclimate before continuing on to Machu Picchu itself. Galapagos trips live or die on which vessel a client books, since boat size determines both the itinerary and how close you actually get to the wildlife.
For clients who've already traveled widely and want something that doesn't resemble their last trip, Central and South America offer scale most regions can't match, Iguazu Falls alone comprises 275 individual waterfalls spread across the Argentina-Brazil border, and Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, serves as the gateway to Antarctica itself. Getting the sequencing, the altitude, the permits, and the season right takes real coordination, which is exactly where Breakout Travel Co. builds these itineraries the same way we build a Tanzania safari or a Morocco desert crossing: around access and timing, not just a list of places to see.
