North America covers more ecological range than most travelers expect from a single continent, and that range is exactly what makes it worth planning rather than defaulting to. A week in Hawaii moves at an entirely different rhythm than a week chasing the northern lights through Alaska's Denali corridor, and neither has much in common with a wine-country drive through California's Central Coast or a colonial city crawl through Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende. Add British Columbia's coastal rainforest and the Canadian Rockies, and the geographic spread starts looking less like one continent and more like four or five distinct trips that happen to share a passport requirement, or in Canada's case, sometimes none at all.

Hawaii rewards travelers who go past Oahu and Maui into Kauai's Nā Pali Coast or the Big Island's volcanic terrain. Canada alone spans coastal British Columbia, the Rockies, and the Maritime provinces, three regions with almost nothing in common beyond the flag.
